The practice of giving is not limited to material things. There are many ways to practice giving. From the spiritual point of view, giving is tremendously important if we wish to experience good fortune in the future. Giving creates the cause for receiving. Without first creating the cause to receive, there is no possibility whatsoever of receiving any object or condition of good fortune. Advanced spiritual practitioners master this practice because it is part of the actual path to enlightenment.

The practice of moral discipline is the conscious decision to refrain from harming others through actions of body, speech, and mind, If one does not make a concerted effort to practice such restraint, they will create causes for their own misfortune and suffering. Buddha clearly indicated that all of our suffering and problems, without exception, arise directly from our having harmed others. Thus, if we are wise we will engage in strong effort to refrain from harming others.
